July Tips
Raise the height of your lawn mower. You should have blades about 2.5-3" tall. And
you should leave the clippings on the lawn. If you end up with clumps of grass after
mowing you are probably mowing too infrequently. You should cut no more than 1/3 of
of the blade at a time. Leaving clippings will not only slow evaporation by providing
shade, but will also recycle water as they are composed of about 80% water. Water will
probably need to be applied at about 1" every 6-7 days if there is no natural precipitation.
Fertilize sometime in the beginning of the month to help with color.
August Tips
With temperatures consistently around 90 degrees root and blade growth will slow down. If
you have a bluegrass lawn you can let it go dormant by not watering it and it will still
return to a healthy green state once you start watering again. Apply 1" of water every 6-10
days (frequency will depend on your own lawn. Apply water as the lawn tells you it needs it).
If you let the lawn go dormant make sure to hand weed regularly because weeds will have an
easier time breaking through the lawn barrier when the lawn is dormant.
September Tips
Time for another application of fertilizer. As temperatures return to more tolerable levels
root growth will increase and you will probably have to mow more often. Fertilizer will boost
plant development and help you to prepare the lawn to be drought tolerant next year. Do not
overwater!! Overwatering will weaken the lawn and produce thatch. Your lawn will need about
1" of water every 7-10 days. If it rains be sure to include that in your irrigation totals.
